November 30 – Dr. Renato Schmidt – Minimize losses to get the most out of your silage
December 1 – Anita Heeg – Understanding your forage analysis
December 2 – Dr. Kim Cassida – Alfalfa quality and lessons from forage trials

Renato Schmidt is the Forage Products Specialist at Lallemand Specialties Inc. Dr. Renato Schmidt has a dairy/beef cattle farm background and is originally from Brazil, where he obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees. He moved to the USA to earn his Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from the University of Delaware with Dr. Limin Kung Jr. and worked in numerous experiments evaluating the effects of different additives on the fermentation of forage crops. He’s authored and co-authored 16 peer-review manuscripts, 32 scientific abstracts and 47 technical articles and joined LANNA as Forage Products Specialist in February/2008.

Anita Heeg is OMAFRA’s Feed Ingredient and By Product Specialist. Anita Heeg graduated from the University of Guelph with an Animal biology Honours degree. Anita and her husband manage a dairy farm and have three young boys. She worked in the feed industry for 7 years in the animal feed additives sector, before joining Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as the Feed Ingredient and By Product Specialist. In this role, Anita looks at the utilization of various feed ingredients, including food waste and by products for livestock.

Dr. Kim Cassida is the Extension Forage and Cover Crop Specialist for Michigan State University, with degrees from Penn State and the University of Maine. Her extension program focuses on all things forage, and her research program focuses on the management of alfalfa, perennial and annual mixtures, and the role of forages and cover crops in improving the stability of agroecosystems. In her spare time, she raises sheep.
